I totally get how feeling fully booked brings a feeling of relief. We’ve all got bills to pay! But being booked out shouldn’t be the only marker for success. The real and satisfying feelings around success for family photographers come from something much deeper.
You’ve heard me say it before, but celebrating the small wins and reflecting on the losses is such an important part of being a small business owner. And it’s those repeated small wins that start to ripple and roll into a sense of momentum in the right direction.
As creatives, we’re always bubbling away with ideas. (I’m forever scribbling mine down on scraps of paper and recording my thoughts on my phone!). But a good idea only gets you partway towards success. It’s the action that leads you towards success. And sometimes all we need is a little guidance and inspiration to help us realise how to turn that amazing idea into small achievable steps.
Artists have ebbed, flowed and evolved over time for centuries. Take Pablo Picasso as an example. After an early start as a technical painter, he moved into his Blue Period (reflecting a time of melancholy and sadness) before moving into his Rose Period (reflecting his more optimistic, bohemian life). And all of this, plus more, came before his distinctive Cubism period.
Yes, we all want to be known for our unique style as photographers, but remember that you don’t need to pigeonhole yourself with a particular look. You’re a creative. You’re allowed to learn new things, play with new styles and evolve with it over time!Â
When I look back at my galleries from the years I was struggling with IVF, I can see that my work was moodier and that I was playing with shadows a lot more. More recently, my work has become brighter, grainier and film-like as I lean into a period of my life where I’ve been feeling a lot of both gratitude and nostalgia.Â
